Coffee has come a long way since it was discovered in 1100 BC
by an Ethiopian goat herder. Today,
there is an abundance of coffee blends and flavours, but the five most popular
varieties include Espresso, Latte, Mocha, Cappucino and Macchiato. And did you know that a cup of coffee a day,
may keep the doctor away! There are some
health benefits associated with drinking a moderate amount of coffee because it
contains antioxidants that might help prevent certain diseases and conditions. Today, Brazil is the largest coffee
producer, with close to 4000 million trees (coffee beans come from coffee
cherries grown on trees). In 2003, a
study showed that 81% of Canadians drink coffee and the majority of coffee
drinkers consume this beverage in the morning at breakfast. But just how often do you hear the phrase “let’s
go for coffee!” Gone are the coffee
shops and diners of yester-year. Today
we have new-age gourmet coffee shops that offer a variety of coffee blends and
recipes, meals and snacks, and many have combined an “art gallery” theme with
their décor. Today’s coffee shops are a
place to relax and converse with friends, or work associates, or even to just
sit quietly on your own to read the newspaper or a book. Rumour has it that the well-known author of
the Harry Potter books, J.K. Rowling, wrote her first book in a coffee shop! The next time you go into a coffee shop, take
a moment to reflect on what it is you enjoy about the experience…the ambience….the
camaraderie with friends…the flavour of the coffee. I’m sure you’ll agree that the coffee
experience encompasses all of those things!
Thank you to the Canvas Cup and to Serious Coffee for providing the
wonderful backrops (and coffee!) for the photos below. The next time you meet friends for coffee,
sit back and relax, say “aaaaahhhh” and enjoy the rich experience of life
well-lived over a cup of coffee.
The Ladder of Life
Welcome to my Blog. I am an Investment Advisor living and working in Port Alberni, but just as importantly, I am a wife, mother, volunteer, and an active and supportive community member. I believe we can all take charge of our destiny, our future, with the proper mind-set, sense of direction, goals and tenacity to attain what we dream about. Think of your life as a ladder, with the steps numbered one through ten. The top of the steps represents the best possible life we can have, while the bottom is the worst. Where do you feel you personally stand at this point in your life? Where would you like to stand? I believe we all have the power to get to that top step, and I hope that some of the blog posts in the weeks and months to come, will inspire you to get there.

Life is Like Coffee || Port Alberni Investment Advisor
Coffee has come to touch our lives in many ways. Not only is having a cup of coffee the first
thing people do before starting their day, but coffee, or “having coffee” is a
way for people to get together and share.
Coffee is an experience. We all
have our own individual tastes and there are all sorts of choices. You can have your coffee black, or with
cream, sugar, or you can splurge and enjoy a cappuccino, latté, espresso, or any number of other delicious
concoctions. You can go through a
drive-through to pick up a coffee on-the-go, or go to a new-age gourmet coffee
shop, which has replaced the former day cafe diner. Many people make going to a coffee shop part
of their daily routine, whether they are at work, shopping, or just meeting
friends. With so many people
incorporating the coffee experience as part of their day, marketing gurus have
jumped on the band wagon to offer a multitude of coffee cups to choose
from. No longer will the simple ceramic
mug do! There are many different sizes,
shapes, colors and styles of coffee cups, from traditional mugs to disposable cups. The coffee cup can come in glass, stainless
steel, porcelain, paper and (shudder) Styrofoam. But when you get right down to it....it’s not
about the cup....it’s about the coffee and the experience it invokes. Life is like coffee. Jobs, money and position in society are the cups, while life is the coffee. Savour the coffee...not the cup! Here are some photos of coffee cups to get
you thinking about coffee and what it means to you. AND, be
sure to check out the thoughtful and inspiring video link at the end of
the photos, to remind you about what is really important in life. So go get a cup of “jo” and enjoy!
